This episode was supposed to be a continuation of Duck Month with a thorough look at Marvel’s Essential Howard The Duck but, just as I was really getting into reading it, the book dissolved in my hands. So instead, I take a side track from Duck Month (don’t worry, it’ll continue with the next show) and talk about how do books live up to hype and expectations set for new comic book readers. Plus there’s some Watchmen, Sandman and Miracleman talk that borders on obsessive. At least, I hope it only borders and doesn’t fall into the psychotic range.

They say every dog has his day but thanks to Don Rosa, we get to see that every duck has his life.

More specifically, Scrooge McDuck gets a life as his story is told in The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck, an excellent biography of a fictional character. In this episode, Scott takes a look at Don Rosa’s graphic novel about Scrooge McDuck and what makes it an enjoyable book even if it does feature a walking and talking duck.

This episode, it’s a meeting of the minds as Wednesday’s Haul hosts the first Wednesday’s Haul/Boxwatcher crossover episode. Joining me this week is Ty Nelson, man about town and the host of Boxwatcher.net, a pop culture blog & podcast. In this first part, Ty and I talk about the commodity of creators in comics, movies and television and how much faith, trust and confidence do we put into them. Do we hang too much importance on the creator of a comic or the creators of a TV show or not enough?

Part 2 of this podcast, where I get to ask Ty what problem he has with “fun” movies should be out later this week.

There are a number of reasons for this but the main one is that I just haven’t felt like doing a podcast for a while, even before the beginning of the year and I don’t want to keep cranking them out because I “need” to. I haven’t looked forward to doing them for a while so instead of forcing myself or feeling guilty when another week goes by that I don’t record, I’m just going to officially sit out for the next 3-4 weeks and re-evaluate what I want to do.

This next part is just my opinion and I don’t really want to start a whole brou-ha-ha over anything but I think in the last 6-12 months that a lot of comic book podcasts have started to sound the same. Whether I’m listening to XYZ or PDQ talk about whatever they want, it all is beginning to run together in my mind, my own podcast included. At the beginning of the year, I made a comment about not wanting my show notes to look the same as everyone else’s but that’s what I think is happening. There’s too many voices and not enough divergence of topics, view points or even voices.

I applaud all the podcasters who turn out something on a weekly basis. Derek, Chris and Bruce are three of my podcasting inspirations and I’m amazed at how all three of them approach podcasting from a different perspective and are able to bring something fresh and new to it most of the time. And I don’t think I’ve made any secret of it but blog/review writing is more fun and enjoyable for me.

I’ll be back when I’ve got something to say.
He somehow thought he had it with House of M but that maybe only broke off a corner of the internet and didn’t have the cataclysmic results that he wanted it to have. But congrats to Joe and to Marvel Comics. I think you finally did it, you broke the internet in half.

But I say Spider-Man was already broken. My Spider-Man was broken in 1987 and all that matters is MY Spider-Man in all of this. Really, that’s all this is about– what version of Spider-Man we grew up with. And mine sounds like it’s the same one as Joe Quesada’s.

In this episode, I talk about why this change is meaningless thanks to the many iterations of Spider-Man that exists. Because what I really want to know if how does this affect my enjoyment of Nicholas Hammond and the Electric Company Spider-Man.

Merry Christmas!!! In keeping with the season this podcast, I look at/re-enact the Christmas story from Batman #219, where Batman and the GCPD caroling brings good will and peace to men to Gotham City. Not a hoax, not an imaginary story– Batman sings “Jingle Bells!” and not the “Batman Smells” version.

This Christmas season, please remember The Hero Initiative and the Comic Podcast Network’s Hero for the Holiday drive. The Hero Initiative is a great organization that helps support comic professional who have fallen into need. The CPN encourages our listeners and fellow fans to donate $3 to the Hero Initiative. That’s the sacrifice of one Marvel or DC comics this holiday season. For more info on Hero, check out www.heroinitiative.org.

On this show, I review The Art of Matt Wagner’s Grendel, a fantastic art book recently published by Dark Horse Comics. This book is as much a history book as it is an art book.

The Comics Podcast Network, a collection of 28 Websites devoted to great comic content, is hosting a Hero Initiative fund drive for the holiday season. From today through December 25, all participating Comics Podcast Network sites will be broadcasting a Hero Initiative message, and all sites will also host a PayPal button where fans can donate direct to Hero. A full list of participating sites can be found at ComicsPodcasts.com.

The Hero Initiative, the only federally chartered 501 (c) (3) charity that helps older comic creators in medical or financial need, is pleased at the initiative shown by this network. “As media involves and podcasts become more of our daily lives, we’re very happy that the Comics Podcast Network has chosen to partner up with The Hero Initiative,” said Hero Board member and owner/operator of Atomic Comics Mike Malve.

Many sites are also planning Hero-themed content, such as AroundComics.com, which plans a “Month of Heroes,” with podcast interviews including Hero Initiative Board members Dennis O’Neil and Brian Pulido. “Comics Podcasts have shown they can build interest in comics and really make a difference for today’s creators,” said Chris Neseman of AroundComics.com. “Now we can do even more by actually helping to improve the lives of veteran creators that need our help. Every dollar helps, and there’s no better way to show your support as a comics fan than by giving to Hero.”

“The Comics Podcast Network is proud to be partnering with the Hero Initiative and helping support the comic book writers, pencilers, inkers, colorists and letterers that have given us such wonderful and imaginative work,” said Scott Cederlund of ComicsPodcasts.com. “During this holiday season, we encourage all of our listeners to remember the Hero Initiative, the great work they do and the support they need.”

The Hero Initiative is the first-ever federally chartered not-for-profit corporation dedicated strictly to helping comic book creators in need. Hero creates a financial safety net for yesterdays’ creators who may need emergency medical aid, financial support for essentials of life, and an avenue back into paying work. It’s a chance for all of us to give back something to the people who have given us so much enjoyment. For more information, visit www.HeroInitiative.org or call 310-909-7809.

The Comics Podcast Network (CPN) is a collection of the best comic book podcasts on the internet. Since May, 2005, the CPN has brought together over 20 podcasts that cover Marvel, DC, Independent comics, golden age, silver age comics, bronze age comics and modern age comics under one banner. For more information on the network and its members, visit us at www.comicspodcasts.com

Joe Sacco is a comic journalist. No, he doesn’t write about comics but he writes about life through his comics (as cliche as that sounds.) With Palestine, Sacco chronicles his trip there during the early 90’s, showing how war and fear terrorized everyone who lived there. His wonderful cartooning helps embellish the other-worldliness experiences of that trip. This week, Fantagraphics is releasing a new edition of Sacco’s book, complete with his note and original sketches.

I’m such a sucker. Really I am. I’ve bought Astonishing X-Men for 23 issues and I know I’ll buy one more as well as the upcoming annual. Why do I continue to do this to myself? In 23 issues, Joss Whedon and John Cassaday’s contribution to the X-Men mythos has been Danger, Breakworld, SWORD and Ord. That’s it. Other than the patented Whedon patter and inconsistent artwork by Cassaday, I can’t figure out what this series has really accomplished. I’ve so much wanted to enjoy and even love this series that’s shown moments of brilliance but, at the end of the day, I think this will be a pretty story that tried to mesh the X-Men of Claremont and Morrison together to lukewarm results.

The New Avengers Illuminati benefits greatly from having Jimmy Cheung on the artwork. He makes super-heroes look so damn good and so damn right. A better part of issue #5 and the whole mini has been mainly just talking heads, featuring Iron Man and his gang of brains and rulers sitting around and talking about everything from their love life to Secret Wars II punctuated by quick and powerful battles. Take issue #5 for example– the first third of the book is the Illuminati discussing Skrullektra before the huge fight begins with the skrulls, only to be wrapped up with the talking heads saying how much they don’t trust each other. There is nothing wrong with the story but how many artists fall flat when it comes to talking heads? How many artists could make the simple panel with the big reveal as classically chilling as Cheung did.
